How to find tractor serial numbers: TractorData.com lists tractor serial numbers under the individual model. Use the menu at the left to select your tractor manufacturer and model, the serial number list will be on the tractor's data page. How to read a tractor serial number list: Tractor serial number lists nearly always show the first tractor built in each year. The other tractors for that year will have successively higher numbers.
Your serial number should lie between two of the stated numbers. Example serial number list: Year Number 1980 501 1981 879.

Got it home and started going through it changing fluids filters etc. Fuel filters were wrong. Than dad noticed the PTO switches were different than one we had rented before. Went on tractor house and started looking at pictures, and I'm thinking we ended up getting a 1998 model.
Which after reading on here is one to shy away from. My big problem is we cant find any serial numbers. According to the book, there should be one under the hood. That one is partially torn off, cant read the serial number. Book also says it should be stamped into the front casting. Not there either. Anybody know vin locations for early tv 140???

Half serial number tag and not able to find it on the frame (stamped in 1/8' deep atleast ) I would take it BACK NOW! Fairly good chance its stolen! Cant find one on the engine either. Is there anywhere else to find one?? They have a serial number listed as RVS019028.

I believe they changed colors from grey to black when they changed factories (Winnipeg to Fargo? ), and designated them '21st Century' units. The versatile on the hood after looking at others on tractorhouse seemed to end in 99.
The spoked wheels as well. Also the controls for the PTO's on newer ones are pull-out switches. These are a rocker. Any way to tell on the trans/diff/pumps?? Thanks for the help.
Checked the frames on the pivots and nothing there either. No serial number on the engine block too. Dads worked with the salesman forever, Smaller dealer bought out by a big one couple years ago, so it was at a diff. Location.called him and hes coming out in the morning to check it out.
