I have used the restore discs that are created from very dissimilar models all the time. I have used x220t discs on my T420s, I have used W520 discs on a Edge E520, and on and on. Even with the drivers being very different, it works great, and running System Update fixes the drivers that was missed. I've tried it both ways on several ThinkPads just to see if it would work and it always has been a flawless process.

Restoring the factory contents by using Recovery Disc Set When the hard disk drive or solid-state drive is replaced because of a failure, no product recovery program is on the new drive. In this case, you must use the recovery disc set for the computer. Order the recovery disc set and the drive at the same time so that you can recover the new drive with the preinstalled software when they arrive. Perhaps it seems that some of our support doccumentation needs to be updated to be more clear and avoid confusion regarding use of USB. As I understand it, the Sandy Bridge (X220) based systems could not boot from USB 3.0 port (and only the i7 models had USB 3.0 port) as the chipset required a driver, but the Ivy Bridge (X230) based systems include the support for USB 3.0 in the hardware. It is probably a conservative recommendation to use / boot from USB 2.0 devices. Thanks all for responses, and sorry its taken so long for me to acknowledge them--work is crazy at the moment. Mark: are you suggesting the documentation serge quoted and pointed to, is out of date in not including anything on usb stick recovery options? If so I think I will be getting myself a 16gb USB 2 stick and following the same steps Bananaman did.
